Climate and emissions
Climate change poses a dire threat to the long-term survival of humanity and our planet, and it is imperative that businesses do their part to address this crisis. Ceridian is committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions from our global operations by 42% by 2030 from a 2019 baseline. We are taking actionable, quantifiable steps to reduce our carbon footprint. This includes ongoing efforts to shrink our physical office footprint globally to meet the needs of an increasingly virtual-first era and our continuing transition to the public cloud from a greater reliance on colocation data centers and on-premises servers. As we make significant progress on our Scope 1 and 2 goal, we are also exploring ways to drive even greater impact with our value chain emissions, including through the development of a sustainable procurement program.
We began reporting to CDP in 2022 and published our first Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Index.
Renewable energy
In addition to focusing on creating efficiencies within our operations to reduce energy usage, in 2022, we began procuring high-quality Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) equivalent to our electricity consumption in every country where we operate. These combined efforts resulted in a 97% reduction in our annual Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2019. We see high-quality EACs as an important contribution not only to meeting our GHG emissions target but also to contributing to continued development of renewable energy infrastructure globally. We joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partnership that recognizes our green power use for our U.S. operations.
Reducing waste
The waste generated in our offices annually has declined by 90% since 2019, in part due to the rightsizing of our office space and the continued virtual workforce environment. We will continue to explore new opportunities to reduce waste-to-landfill in our operations.
Sustainable buildings
Where we do maintain an in-person presence globally, we prioritize leasing in environmentally friendly and healthy office buildings. We opened a new Singapore office location in 2022 at the Income @ Raffles building. This location is Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Gold PLUS certified, a green building rating system in Singapore designed to assess the overall environmental performance of new and existing buildings. Several of our other global office locations have a LEED certification, including Toronto and Winnipeg. We work with building landlords to operationalize many of the environmental benefits of our leasing choices.
